Ocean Hitchhiker is from the collection Curious Encounters.

An exploration of innocence, adaptation, and our shared responsibility for our planet.

A young turtle glides through the water, unknowingly pulling along a discarded plastic toy boat, symbolising how marine life silently bears the weight of human actions.

I was inspired to paint this after learning so much about turtles when I visited Tobago in 2024 and witnessed 5 leatherback turtles laying their eggs on the beach. This was a very moving experience, to be so close to such a massive creature, who returned to the beach where her life first began. I was also fortunate on a subsequent visit to Tobago to witness baby hatchlings.

The knowledge I gained and the sights I experienced gave me the incentive to paint a green turtle whose life has been impacted by plastic waste in the ocean. Although it's a whimsical scene, I wanted to raise awareness of how resilient these sea creatures are, despite human pollution.
